Description
A tall, perennial herb known to develop woody stalks. It has one of the largest wildflowers in the Northeast, measuring about 6 inches across. The flowers resemble hibiscus flowers. The leaves are alternate, large, somewhat heart-shaped, rarely lobed, toothed, often with dense, fine hairs. They have 5 petals and many protruding stamens united around the style, with a spreading head. The petals are white or rose color with a central wine-purple spot. Blooms appear July–October.
